From Ancient Lands to the Highest Lands

A 50th birthday and a retirement saw us flee the UK to Turkey to celebrate together. A beautiful hotel and surroundings kept us in awe. Waking up and looking over to the horizon being greeted by Samos never got old.

Trudging through the Town

A short drive from our hotel lead us into Kusadasi Town. Famous for being a popular cruise ship destination, the town is littered with statues and a beautiful harbor. The town provided a wonderful buzz. Football on many pub screens, the shop keepers trying to entice you and the smell of the many restaurants all combine for a great feel. Looking around, something new seemed to pop up in each corner. Past the similar football shirts hung above shops, statues, street performers and even a backgammon tournament,  stood out from the background.

The Safari with no animals…

To break up the all inclusive lifestyle of, sunbathe, drink, swim, eat and repeat, we booked some excursions. A Safari, with the promise of a few animals, and even the possibility of turtles! A heard of cows. That was the extent of our animal viewing on the safari. Animal’s aside, this was my favorite day. The tree covered hills provide the perfect vantage point to see Long Beach and the Greek island of Samos. It homes the ruins of a hiding place for the first Christians hiding from the Romans. It is a very interesting and peaceful place to experience.

Exploring Ephesus

The main reason why Kusadasi is a popular destination for Cruise Ships is Ephesus. Ephesus is an ancient city just outside of Kusadasi. In its time, Ephesus was one of the worlds best places. The port no longer reaches to the city, hence why it was once forgotten. Only 20% is thought to have been excavated. What is there is astonishing. A huge amphitheater, the library and more tower above. It is very rich in history and very interesting to discover.

Ancient Lands

A part of the same excursion to Ephesus includes a visit to the Temple of artimus and Virgin Mary’s old house. Virgin Mary arrived in Ephesus after Jesus’ crucifixion. High in the hills is a reconstruction of her house towards the last of her years. This is a peaceful spot, that those who aren’t religious can also take time to reflect at. A wall of white tissues with wishes written on dominates a section of the location. The Temple of Artimus is one of the Ancient wonders of the world. I was rather excited to see this. It is a huge temple with many columns. Or so the pictures say. Now it is a nothing more than an underwhelming green patch of land with a couple of columns.  But that being said, it isn’t every day you get to visit an ancient wonder of the world.

Celebrations are over

A 50th birthday was a great excuse to pack up and have a week in the sun. Exploring and discovering new places together and constantly laughing will live long in the memory. Now, the tan is still fresh and the old cliche, ‘I need a holiday to get over my holiday’ is being brandished far too much.
