Checking out Japan’s Capital City. Wearing Bvlgari Glasses in Tokyo.

(Read Time Approx: 3 Minutes)

 Journeying through the Japanese Capital

by Joshua Paget / for Eyewearthese.com / in Journeys

Japan has always been a location on my list of places to visit. The rich culture and passion for all things new sparks an interest and intrigue inside me. So, a group of friends and I readied ourselves for the almost 12 hour flight to eagerly explore the land of the rising sun.

Bright Lights Bigger City

You can’t go to Tokyo and not visit Osaka. Dontonbori is an area within the Osaka region of Tokyo. In the day, shop fronts are colorful, and by night they are illuminated with the stereotypical florescent lighting you would imagine. The area is alive with the hustle and bustle of tourists and those looking for the nightlife. Shops sell food and many touristy souvenirs. Further down the street, street performers reenact their performance. It is quite surprising considering how busy the streets are, that they find the space to perform.

Surreal Senso-Ji

Discovering historic culture of another country is always refreshing and thought provoking. Away from the exciting, bright and modern area of Tokyo lies Senso-Ji. Senso-Ji is the oldest temple in Tokyo and is an ancient Buddhist temple. A rainy day didn’t dampen our spirits and luckily, it wasn’t a pathetic fallacy. Quite the opposite. The colorful and vibrant structures greet the eye beautifully. The structures stand prominent, in a traditional Japanese design. Senso-Ji is rich in history.

Into the Woods

In Tokyo, a little wooded region nestles between the concrete jungle and a train track. This area is Meiji Jingu. A shrine dedicated to the spirits of the Emperor Meiji. The area is peaceful, and  a beautiful Harajuku Gate greets all who walk to the area. The greenery transports you from the high tech, man made culture to a sense of tranquility.

A Towering View

Tokyo isn’t short of vantage points. There is the Tokyo Tower (think of a red and white Eiffel Tower) and the tallest tower in the world, the Tokyo Skytree. We instead opted for the shorter, yet free option of Tocha. Tocha is the shortened name for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. At 202 metres high, the views are amazing. We were told on a clear day, you can see Mount Fuji.

Gundam

The 1970’s saw the rise of Gundam. In the 2010’s, I saw the Gundam. Gundam is a popular robot Anime series that has taken Japan by storm. So much so, outside the DriverCity shopping centre in Odaiba, a huge robot looms over the streets. It is breath taking. The sheer size is overwhelming. We also managed to see a small robot show with more of the Gundam characters, and a smaller replica.

Sayonara

Our time in Tokyo was amazing. The juxtaposition of culture and modernism was a treat. I think it is a place you can only truly appreciate when you are there. It is a wonderful city and I am blessed to have traveled here.
