Tasting local beers and enjoying traditional Morris dancers. Wearing Persol Sunglasses at a beer festival.

Checking Out Chappel Beer Festival

by Joshua Paget / for Eyewearthese.com / in Journeys

A real ale goes down a treat at the best of times. So, discovering a locally hosted beer festival was a great find. An accessible location meant we could leave the car behind and really get involved with the event. Organized by the CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale Group) and hearing great reviews, I was confident the event would be a hit.

Full Steam Ahead

The location for the event was the East Anglian Railway Museum. This station is a small working Steam Engine museum. The setting was perfect. A sunny day, rural surroundings and steam engine carriages all combine to make the day. The utilization of the carriages was very clever. The carriages served as a space to sit down and enjoy company away from the hustle of the goods shed. The goods shed traditionally held cargo from the trains set the deliver them, a lot like a warehouse in modern times. In fact, this particular goods shed was where Blur played their first ever gig. But today it was home to rows and rows of beer barrels and eager faces ready to taste the content of said barrels.

Spoiled for Choice

Not only was the goods shed brimming with barrels of locally brewed beers, but so was the outside premises. Black Stout all the way to the lighter pale ales, you name it, the choice was there. Luckily I don’t have much of a preference, as long as it’s wet, I’ll try it. I must admit, I may did forget to smell the beer and taste it ‘correctly’ a couple of times. When standing in front of the many options, I found picking the drink by name was a good system. I love the names of real ales, it is as if they’re in constant competition to get the most ridiculous name for their product. A personal favorite was Old Ben’s Oatmeal.

Dancing, music and laughter

We take for granted the tradition of Morris dancing. Yes, it might not be as fancy as the Tango or as exciting as the Samba, but it is tradition after all. I really enjoyed the Morris Dancers who performed at the beer festival. The talent was in abundance with many instruments being played and the dancing was precise. It had to be, because if anyone lost concentration they would be hit with a large stick that is involved in the dances.

Mingling with the Morris Dancers

Once they had finished their performance the dancers mingled and enjoyed the festival. It was great to see the traditional dress blend with the traditional steam engine surroundings. I also loved how one member took time to talk to an american at length. He was in awe of the tradition and inquisitive how he got into Morris dancing.

Empty Glasses

The last pint finished, and the night dwindling to a nice ending, we started our journey back home. The event was a nice refreshing change to a normal weekend. It was early September, so rounded off the summer nicely. The proceeds of the day go to the running costs of the museum, so that felt nice, knowing our enjoyment went to such a beautiful place for people to enjoy. I would recommend going to a beer festival. The range of beers, ciders and even some wines are great. It’s a fantastic social event, and is lovely to be surrounded by people enjoying the day for the same reasons.
