A stroll in Valletta

February 26, 2018

A day exploring Malta’s capital city.

A Walk in the European City of Culture 2018

by Joshua Paget / for Eyewearthese.com / in Journeys

The announcement that Valletta is the joint capital of culture is guaranteed to bring a lot of tourism. So we decided to park the car and take a walk around Valletta before the crowds descend on the Maltese capital.

Banking on a wonderful day

Our first steps into the Maltese capital saw us powering up steep streets. It was staggering how steep the incline was at points, and it indeed left us staggering our way around. Luckily we were heading in the right direction as the Bank of Malta greeted us. A modest building. An easily missable building, if it wasn’t for its Maltese flag and signage.

Auberge de Castille

The Auberge de Castille imposes itself. A total Contrast to the Bank of Malta. The frontage is grand and is reminiscent of its royal origins. You could (and we did) spend a long time taking in all of its features. It always takes me back seeing historically built buildings which have such detail. The pure fact a group of people crafted art in a hard material to stand the test of time on a building is truly astonishing.

Patriotic Reminders

All around the Maltese capital are patriotic symbols of the country. Flags fly high, and the Maltese cross is prominent throughout Valletta. The sense of national pride is a heartwarming sight. A personal highlight is the Manuel Dimech Monument. For a statue, it emits life and movement, making its heavy metal material seem light and personified.

A View of the Past

Views from the Upper Barrakka Gardens are both beautiful and thought-provoking. There are views out onto the Mediterranean Sea and across the Grand Harbour. Across the Grand Harbour are a numerous amount of Forts, like Forti Sant’ Anglu on the tip of Birgu. This provokes the thoughts of this small nations history. It’s evident the pivotal role it played as being a country to occupy by many conquerors. And, it isn’t hard to imagine the lifeline the Grand Harbour is, and was, to the capital.

A Nod to the Present

Now you see the contrast of historic defence strategies and contemporary trade. It didn’t take long for us to see cruise ships dominating the Harbour, most likely from Sicily. Sympathetically designed into the historic landscape, The Upper Barrakka Lift blends into the surroundings, a feature that is less harsh to see than the docks.

An Obvious Choice

After the day of exploring Valletta it is clear why it is jointly the Captial of Culture. Enshrined in rich history, architecture and vantage points, Valletta creates an alluring backdrop for the cultural events planned.
